Austria eyes improvement in agricultural trade with Russia following sanctions: minister

Austrian Minister of Agriculture Andrae Rupprechter said Monday he believes significant progress will be made in improving trade with Russia in 2016 in light of the present embargo on many Austrian agricultural products.

Speaking at an agricultural conference in Vienna, he said sensible commercial relations between the two countries must be re-established soon, following implementation of the two-way embargoes in the fallout of the Ukraine crisis in 2014, local media reported.

As a result of the embargoes, Austrian food and agricultural exports to Russia plunged 43 percent in 2015 to reach 107.1 million euros (120.03 million U.S. dollars). In particular, income of pork and dairy farmers in Austria have declined significantly after the sanctions.

Rupprechter also praised Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economy Reinhold Mitterlehner's visit to Russia at the beginning of February. Enditem
