Jordan says nuclear power program strategic option to reduce energy bill

Xinhua, February 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan on Monday said the country's nuclear program is a strategic option to reduce the country's energy bill, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Khaled Toukan said the country's nuclear program will ensure stability in prices of electricity and generation of electricity.

"The nuclear reactors will reduce the burden on Jordan due to the large increase in energy spending and rise in demand on electricity," Toukan said at the Parliament on Monday.

He added that Jordan is home to a large reserve of uranium resources, adding that Arab countries are expected to start importing uranium from Jordan in the next ten years.

In October 2013, Jordan approved Russia' s Atomstroyexport, a leading nuclear power service exporter, as technology provider for Jordan's first nuclear plant.

Jordan aimed to increase energy sufficiency and reduce imports by building the nuclear reactor, which will have two 1,000-megawatt power plants. Enditem
