Chinese sound gong to begin the Year of Monkey at Euronext Amsterdam

Xinhua, February 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chairman of the Chinese business association here, Tony Fung, sounded the gong for the opening of the Euronext stock market here on Monday, the beginning of the Chinese New Year.

"The trade between the Netherlands and China dates back to four centuries ago. Nowadays, China is an important player in the world economy and there is a big Chinese community living in Amsterdam. All this made it natural to invite a Chinese association to sound the gong at Euronext Amsterdam on the Chinese New Year's Day," said Hendrik Koppe, director of clearing services at Euronext Amsterdam.

Established in 1602, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange merged in September 2000 with the Brussels and Paris stock exchanges to form Euronext, and is now known as Euronext Amsterdam.

The Chinese community in the Netherlands is estimated to have a population of over 120,000. The Chinese business association in the capital city groups about 100 Chinese companies doing business in trade and restaurants.

"We are happy to be invited to the ceremony. In Chinese tradition, gongs, bells and lion dances during the New Year festival will bring good luck," said Fung. Endit
