Djibouti president meets railway workers trained in China

Xinhua, February 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh over the weekend met with young railway workers for the newly created Djibouti Railway Authority who underwent training in China.

Comprised of engineers and technicians, the 94 young Djiboutians were trained in China to be able to handle the Djibouti-Addis Ababa railway line whose construction work is nearing completion.

A statement released after the meeting indicated that Guelleh urged the youths recruited by Djibouti Railway Authority to work hard and ensure the new project succeeds.

The construction of the 752 km Addis-Ababa - Djibouti railway line was funded and done by China. It had a component of "transfer of skills," hence the training in China.

The new electric railway line will have capacity to transport 3,500 tons of cargo instead of the 500 tons that were being transported on the old line.

The old Djibouti-Ethiopia railway line which was constructed by a French company, was inaugurated in 1917. Endit
