Myanmar president calls for safeguarding constitution in parliament undertaking

Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Monday called for safeguarding 2008 constitution in parliament undertaking of drafting, amending and abolishing the laws.

In his message to the first session of new Union Parliament, U Thein Sein stressed the importance of conserving peace and stability of the country and cooperation with ethnic people.

The new union parliament made up of the House of Representatives (Lower House) and the House of Nationalities (Upper House) began its first session on the same day, which also took place simultaneously with new sessions of region or state parliament in their respective regions and states in the country.

The union parliament set March 17 as the date for three groups of the union parliament representatives to nominate their respective candidates for presidential run.

The summon for the first sessions of union parliament, lower house, upper house came nearly three months after the end of the general election on Nov. 8, 2015, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats. Enditem
