The majority of Spaniards would prefer seeing a coalition government formed between the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) of Pedro Sanchez and center-right formation Citizens, according to an opinion poll published in the El Pais newspaper on Sunday.
The poll came five days after Sanchez was given the chance to form a government after acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy admitted he didn't have the support to form a government led by his Peoples Party (PP).
The PSOE/Citizens option is the only one which actually has a positive rating in the poll enjoying a rating of plus 9, with the 'least unpopular' option at minus 6 would be for the PSOE, who have just 90 seats in the 350 seat Congress try and govern on their own, while the alternative of a PSOE, PP, Citizens coalition also has a negative response of minus 11 from voters, only worsened by the option of a pact formed by the PSOE with left wing parties Podemos and United Left with a rating of minus 21.
The poll complied by Metroscope also showed changes in voting intentions and although the PP remain the most popular option for voters, their support has dropped to 24 percent, down 4.7 percent from Dec. 20.
Meanwhile, support for the PSOE has increased from 22 percent in the general election, to 23.9 percent, taking them well clear of Podemos, who have 20.5 percent of voter support, while Citizens have seen an upturn in fortunes, rising 4.6 percent in voting intentions, with nearly all of that coming from dissatisfied former PP supporters.
The findings of the poll contrasted with those published by the Center for Sociological Investigation on Friday, which showed a slight rise in support of the PP, with Podemos overtaking the PSOE in second place in voting intentions. Endit
