Singapore "strongly urges" DPRK government to refrain from further provocation

Xinhua, February 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Singapore "strongly urge the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) government to refrain from further provocation" following its launch of a long-range rocket earlier on Sunday, said Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MFA).

"We are appalled by this series of deliberate and provocative actions of the DPRK...It is yet another violation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, which prohibits the DPRK from any launch using ballistic missile technology," MFA stated in a press release.

The DPRK has confirmed that it successfully launched a Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite, an earth observation satellite, on Sunday morning.

There was widespread fear that the launch was a disguised test of ballistic missile technology as rockets and ballistic missiles have lots of overlapping technologies.

The DPRK is banned under UN Security Council resolutions from testing a rocket by use of ballistic missile technology and staging a nuclear test.

The DPRK conducted what it said was its first H-bomb test on Jan. 6. It was the fourth of nuclear detonations following tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

"The latest launch and the nuclear test on Jan. 6 2016 represent grave threats to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. We strongly urge the DPRK government to refrain from further provocation, abide by its international obligations, and return to negotiations immediately," the MFA statement said. Enditem
