Women's life expectancy increases to 85

The average life expectancy of Shanghai citizens born last year is 82.75 years, an increase of more than three months from last year's figure of 82.47 years, according to official figures released yesterday.

 

Girls born last year are expected to live 85.09 years on average, or six months more than their sisters born a year earlier, the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said in its annual report.

Boys, meanwhile, can expect to live for 80.47 years, or five months longer than their brothers who joined the world in 2014.

Other indicators also pointed to Shanghai having a generally healthier population.

The infant mortality rate, for instance, fell to 4.58 per 1,000, from 4.83 a year earlier, while the maternal death rate fell to 6.66 per 100,000, from 6.74, the commission said, adding that both figures were for Shanghai citizens and registered migrant workers.
