Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire presidents hold talks to normalize ties

Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore and his Cote d'Ivoire counterpart Alassane Ouattara met in Addis Ababa to normalize diplomatic ties between the two nations, an official source said Monday.

Relations between the two countries have not been rosy since the fall of the regime of Burkinabe's ex-president Blaise Compaore in October 2014.

A statement released from the Burkina Faso presidency said the two leaders met on Jan. 29 on the sidelines of a meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council which the two presidents attended.

"Given the nature of relations between Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire, their respective authorities had the obligation of ensuring the ties between the two countries are strengthened and consolidated," Burkinabe president is reported as having said.

"We shall do everything to ensure that what happened in the past remains there," he said, while at the same time calling for "restoration of trust between the two nations and their people."

Relations between Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso deteriorated further after Ouagadougou issued an international arrest warrant against Guillaume Soro, Speaker of Cote d'Ivoire's Parliament, on suspicion of involvement in the September 2015 failed coup in Burkina Faso. Endit
