The sales of new cars in Spain rose by 12.1 percent year-on-year in January, the associations of vehicle producers ANFAC and sales rooms GANVAN said in a press release on Monday.
A total of 76,395 cars were sold in Spain in January, the best monthly record registered since 2008. It marked the 29th months of sales growth in a row.
In 2015, 1,034,000 new cars were sold in Spain, the first time sales passed the one million mark in six years. The Spanish car industry aims to sell 1.1 million cars in 2016, according to the press release.
The upturn in the Spanish economy is the main factor behind the improved figures, along with the government's Plan PIVE, which aimed at stimulating car sales in new markets.
The January figures received a major boost thanks to a 25.2 percent increase in the sales of company cars. 23,128 cars were sold to companies in the month, according to the press release.
Meanwhile, the number of cars bought by car rental firms rose by 34.7 percent to 11,650.
Despite improved sales, the auto industry warns that the economic crisis means the average age of cars on Spanish roads is still high at 11.6 years, and old cars cause problems such as pollution. Endit
