Su Jia-chyuan of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was elected as new head of Taiwan's lawmaking body on Monday.

Su and his running partner Tsai Chi-chang won the election by 74 to 35 over the candidates from the Kuomintang (KMT), Lai Shyh-bao and his running mate Tseng Ming-chung.

Born in 1956, Su served as head of southern Taiwan's Pingtung County, head of the island's civil affairs authority and DPP secretary-general.

In last month's election of legislators, the DPP got 68 out of 113 legislator seats, compared with 35 seats for the KMT. Endi
