Colombia asks Venezuela to probe cross-border shooting

Xinhua, February 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Colombia has asked neighboring Venezuela to investigate a cross-border exchange of fire over the weekend, Colombia's Foreign Affairs Ministry said Sunday.

A Venezuelan navy patrol chased several canoes to the Colombian bank of the Arauca River in the border town of Arauquita on Saturday night, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the Colombian police, according to a statement posted on the ministry's website.

No one was injured in the gunfight, the ministry said, adding that it has launched its own investigation since Saturday night.

The Colombian government also "has contacted Venezuelan authorities in an attempt to clarify the circumstances of the incident and take necessary measures," the ministry said.

The diplomatic way adopted to handle the shooting appears to indicate that the two sides' border tension caused by Venezuela's forced repatriation of Colombian refugees last year have subsided. Endi
