Xinhua, February 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Venezuela has earned two passes to the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games after Daniel Flores and Jose Vicente Gutierrez classified this weekend during the Sailing World Cup 2016 in Miami, the United States.

Flores performed brilliantly in the 10 regattas in the Windsurf RX:X category, finishing the category as Latin America's best sailing competitor, while Jose Vicente Gutierrez gained his slot by standing out in the Laser Standard category.

With the Flores and Gutierrez's tickets, Venezuela now has 34 athletes qualified for Rio 2016 just 187 days before the world sporting event's opening ceremony.

Until now, Venezuela will compete in athletics (8 athletes), swimming (3), weightlifting (3), basketball (12), cycling (2), equestrian (2), archery (1), target shooting (1) and sailing (2).

The Caribbean country hopes to overcome the number of athletes that represented them in the London Olympics in 2012. The country also hopes to get better results than they achieved in 2012.

The South American nation qualified for London with 69 athletes and won one gold medal and eight Olympic diplomas.

The Ministry for Youth and Sport assured there are resources guaranteed for athletes that are still in with a chance of qualifying,

"Sports policy is a state priority as well as a priority in the social field," said Minister for Youth and Sport, Mervin Maldonado recently.

Venezuela is hoping to yet gain passes in boxing, fencing and indoor and beach volleyball, in the upcoming competitions. Enditem
