Over 2,200 government troops killed in Ukraine conflict

Xinhua, January 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 2,269 government soldiers were killed since the outbreak of the conflict in eastern Ukraine almost two years ago, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Friday.

Among those killed, there are 21 youngsters less than 18 years old and 650 servicemen aged between 18 and 25, Poroshenko said while speaking to students of Kiev Military Lyceum.

A total of 121,000 Ukrainian servicemen are involved in the conflict against pro-independence rebels in Lugansk and Donetsk regions, Poroshenko said.

Fighting has been raging in Ukraine's restive east since April 2014, when government troops launched offensives against insurgents to regain control over the seized cities and towns.

Since then, more than 9,000 people, including combatants and civilians, were killed and about 20,000 others were wounded in the hostilities.

In recent months, fighting has significantly eased despite sporadic clashes after the warring sides declared a comprehensive ceasefire in the conflict-torn regions in September 2015. Endi
