Feyenoord slump to club record fourth defeat in a row

Xinhua, January 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Feyenoord equaled the negative record of fourth consecutive league defeats by losing against sc Heerenveen on Thursday (1-2) in the final game of the mid-week 20th Eredivisie match round.

After defeats against NEC (3-1, away), PSV (2-0, home) and AZ (4-2, away) Feyenoord had little confidence in their own stadium in Rotterdam against Heerenveen. The visitors had the best chances and came in front through Henk Veerman.

With substitute Anass Achahbar for injured striker Michiel Kramer Feyenoord fought for the equalizer, which came in the 71st minute. Achahbar scored with a spectacular bicycle-kick. The goal gave Feyenoord hope for more, but after bad defending by the home-team Joey van den Berg earned Heerenveen the win six minutes from time.

With their fourth consecutive loss in the Eredivisie Feyenoord equaled a negative club record of 1958 and 1988. The loss also put the Rotterdam based giants further behind on Ajax and PSV. Next up is ADO Den Haag on Sunday.

On Tuesday league leaders Ajax drew 0-0 against Heracles Almelo, while reigning champions PSV beat Excelsior 3-1 on Wednesday. Luuk de Jong gave PSV an early lead in Rotterdam, Jorrit Hendrix smashed home the second goal in the second half and Luciano Narsingh secured the victory, before an own goal by Jeffrey Bruma in the final minute led to the 3-1 final score.

Due to the win PSV narrowed the gap with league leaders Ajax to one point, with 14 match rounds remaining. Ajax are on 48 points, PSV on 47, followed by Feyenoord (36), which saw NEC (34), beating FC Twente 2-0 on Wednesday, and Heracles (34) come closer. Endit
