Belgium arrests Iraqi terror suspect at asylum center: report

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police in Belgium have arrested an Iraqi man at an immigration center near Brussels on suspicion of belonging to the Islamic State organization, Belgian public broadcaster RTBF reported on Wednesday.

The arrest happened at a center for migrants in Charleroi, south of the Belgian capital. RTBF said the man in his 40s, identified in the report as Bassman A., had been in Belgium since last May.

According to RTBF, on arrival he had stayed with a relative and left a camera behind, including photos in which he is seen posing next to the Islamic State flag. A similar flag was found among his possessions at the immigration center.

His telephone calls were tapped and it is alleged that they show he had links with various people under surveillance by the Belgian intelligence services.

Bassman A. was arrested on Jan. 22 and appeared in court in Charleroi on Jan. 27. He can be kept in police custody for one month. Endit
