Croatian oppositions urge veterans' affairs minister to step down

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatian oppositions in parliament on Wednesday called for the resignation of Veterans' Affairs Minister Mijo Crnoja after he allegedly falsely registered his address and showed physical violence on several occasions.

Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic said that his party would give Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic 24 hours to replace Crnoja who was appointed five days ago, otherwise the SDP would launch proceedings in parliament to replace Crnoja, Croatian News Agency Hina reported.

The members of Parliament from Croatian People's Party (HNS) and Labour Party also asked Crnoja to step down.

Media reported Crnoja did not reside at the address he was registered in Samobor, a town some 20 km away from Zagreb where he actually lived and speculated it was related to municipal tax fraud because municipal tax in Samobor is zero whereas in Zagreb municipal tax is 18 percent.

It was reported that Crnoja was at least involved in a fight with two bus drivers, which he has admitted.

Earlier Crnoja's appointment was opposed by several NGO, which criticized him for his idea to publish a register of traitors of national interests.

However, the Ministry of Veterans' Affairs strongly denied the accusations, but so far Crnoja hasn't respond to any accusations. Endit
