Chinese envoy calls for reactivating peace process between Palestine and Israel

Xinhua, January 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Tuesday called on the international community to take more robust measures and reactivate the peace process so as to bring Palestine and Israel to the negotiating table.

Peace talks between Palestine and Israel are deadlocked, with intensified conflicts and worsening security situation in the Middle East, said Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN at a Security Council meeting on the Middle East.

The international community should urge both Palestine and Israel to take immediate actions to ease tension, said Liu.

"As a party who has an upper hand, Israel should take the lead in this regard. At the same time, legitimate security concerns of the countries in this region should be given proper attention," he said.

The envoy also called on the Security Council to seriously consider providing international protection to the Palestinian people.

In order to improve the livelihood of the Palestinian people, China has decided to provide assistance, totaling 50 million yuan, said Liu. "China is ready, together with the international community, to play its part to move forward the Middle East peace process."

On Syria, Liu said that the search for a political solution has been provided with a new window of opportunity. China hopes that the new round of talks in Geneva can be held shortly.

"We hope that the international community will work jointly to preserve the positive momentum in achieving a political solution," he said.

On Tuesday, the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, sent out invitations to participants of the intra-Syrian talks that will start in Geneva on Friday in order to bring an early end to the longstanding conflict in the Middle East. Enditem
