47-year-old man dies of dengue in Singapore

Xinhua, January 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

A 47-year-old man has died of dengue in a hospital in Singapore, said the country's Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) in a joint release on Sunday.

The man, who has died at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), is the first person in Singapore who lost his life because of dengue in 2016. The local death toll was four last year, reported Channel NewsAsia.

The Singaporean was admitted to KTPH on Jan. 21. His condition deteriorated and passed away the next day, added the authorities.

The release said the patient had been staying in an area located within an active 10 case dengue cluster. NEA has been inspecting the premises in the area, and detected and destroyed six counts of mosquito breeding thus far, of which five were found in residential premises and one in common areas.

Vector control operations to kill adult mosquitoes and destroy any potential breeding habitats have been ongoing, according to the release.

The further increase in the Aedes mosquito population is due to the slightly warmer than usual year-end weather, which is closely related to the El Nino phenomenon. The warmer weather aids in breeding and spread of both the mosquito vector and the virus. Endit
