Xinhua, January 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least three people including two officers were killed and four others injured when militants opened fire on a checkpoint in the Egyptian Delta province of Sharqia, local media reported on Sunday.

Militants on three motor bikes have opened fire on a security checkpoint in Faqous city, 80 km east of Cairo, killing two security men and one farmer. Four civilians were wounded in the attack.

Islamist militants have stepped up attacks on Egyptian soldiers and police since the army toppled President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.

Hundreds of security men have died during the attacks. Islamic State's Egypt affiliate claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.

The attacks also crept to capital Cairo and other cities, killing civilians. On Friday nine people killed in Cairo in a bomb attack. Endit
