Namibia's U-17 girls lose 0-5 to Nigeria's Flamingoes

Xinhua, January 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Namibia's Baby Gladiators are out of the U-17 2016 FIFA Women's World Cup competitions after losing to the Flamingoes of Nigeria 0-5 in Windhoek Friday.

The Flamingoes now proceed to play South Africa after beating the Baby Gladiators by 9-0 on aggregate.

The 2016 FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup for 2016 will be held in Jordan from Sept. 30 September to Oct. 21.

In the first leg of the qualifiers played in Abuja on Jan. 9, the Flamingoes won by 4-0.

Two of the five goals were scored during the first half of the match played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Namibia's coach said Mervin Mbakera his players had worked hard despite the loss and that he hoped they will do better next time.

"I would like to thank our supporters for coming out in numbers, this shows they still support the team despite us trailing ahead of our return leg," he said, adding that it was not their wish to let in so many goals.

He said it should be understood that the girls were in camp for three months and that sometimes it is not easy to keep up with the pressure.

"The performance today might have been affected by players who had to leave camp and travel outside of Windhoek to go register for school, but if we look beyond this game we have a good team that can improve going forward," he told the media. Enditem
