UN Security Council slams attack on Mogadishu restaurant

Xinhua, January 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council Friday slammed the attack on a popular Mogadishu restaurant, which killed at least 20 people.

The 15-member UN body "condemned in the strongest terms" the attack by Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda linked militant group, in a press statement.

The Council reaffirmed that "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security," stressing that those responsible for these killings will be held accountable.

A car packed with explosives rammed into Lido beach restaurant in Mogadishu on Thursday evening, after which several attackers opened fire at the hotel, killing at least 20 people and injuring 25 others. The Al-Qaeda linked militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility.

The members of the council also emphasized the need to prevent and suppress the financing of Al-Shabaab, reiterating their determination that no terrorist attack shall dampen the Security Council's resolve to bring the peace and stability to Somalia that its people deserve, and look forward to elections in 2016 which will help reinforce the path towards stability.
