Military to remain on streets of Brussels until March 1

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Army officers will remain present on the streets of Brussels until March 1, the Belgian council of ministers announced in a statement on Friday.

Belgian public broadcaster RTBF said the decision made by the cabinet - which is chaired by prime minister Charles Michel - involves the ongoing mobilization of 1,000 soldiers in Brussels, of whom up to 700 will patrol the streets.

The statement said: "On the recommendation of interior and security minister Jan Jambon, the council of ministers has voted in favour of keeping army officers on the ground, with the view to ensuring surveillance missions."

On Jan. 8, Belgium's Co-ordinating Body for Threat Analysis, OCAM, decided to maintain the terror threat level at 3 out of a possible 4, following information provided by the authorities.

A further overall evaluation should be conducted by OCAM but no date has yet been communicated. Enditem
