Myanmar opposition party designates sole spokesperson during transition period

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's election-winning opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), has designated Aung San Suu Kyi, the party's chairperson, as the sole spokesperson with regard to the party's policy and matter of transition, said an announcement of the NLD Friday.

The current situation falls within a period to handle gently the party policy and transition matters and no person is empowered to speak for the party other than Suu Kyi, the statement said.

The statement came after information about the nomination of two speakers and two deputy speakers for the two Houses of the new parliament was leaked out before it is formally announced.

The next term of sessions of the parliament, which was produced through Nov. 8, 2015 general election, is due to begin on Feb. 1.

The NLD won an absolute majority of the parliamentary seats in the election and is fully qualified to form a new government independently under the constitution. Endit
