(Recast)Myanmar releases 101 prisoners

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Myanmar government on Friday released a total of 101 more prisoners including some political prisoners from various jails across the country under a directive of the President's Office.

The release of the prisoners came more than a week before the new parliament is to convene its first session on Feb. 1 in accordance with the result of the Nov. 8 general election.

The release was made in response to the call by social organizations and individuals and out of consideration of ensuring stability, making eternal peace, national reconciliation of the country and enabling all to participate in political process as well as out of humanitarian ground, the statement said.

The government last granted amnesty to 6,966 prisoners including 210 detained foreigners in July 2015. Endit
