Williams shuns Premier League to renew with Athletic Club Bilbao

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spain Under-21 international Inaki Williams has disappointed a host of potential suitors from the Premier League by signing a new contract with his club Athletic Club Bilbao.

The 21-year-old, who progressed through the Athletic youth system to become the first black player to score for the club, which only signs players born or brought up in the Basque region in the north of Spain, had been watched by clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City in recent weeks.

His previous deal expired in June 2017 and his buyout clause of 20 million euros (22 million US dollars) made him a tempting target for the big-spending clubs, but his new deal ties him to Athletic until the end of June 2021 while raising the buyout clause to 50 million euros.

Williams broke into the Athletic first team last season and this campaign has scored 10 goals in 24 first team appearances. Endit
