Croatian PM-designate presents makeup of cabinet

Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatian Prime Minister-designate Tihomir Oreskovic on Thursday presented the makeup of his cabinet, which will be tasked with growing a weak economy and overcome the challenges of public debts.

Oreskovic named Tomislav Karamarko, the president of the Croatian Democratic Union(HDZ), as the first deputy prime minister, and Bozo Petrov, the leader of a newly founded small party Bridge, as the deputy prime minister.

Zdravko Maric and Tomislav Panenic will be respectively serving as the finance and the economy ministers, who have to deal with public debts near 90 percent of GDP and high unemployment.

Maric was a state secretary in the finance ministry and Panenic was the mayor of a municipality in eastern Croatia.

Miro Kovac, a diplomat and the HDZ secretary for international relations, was recommended for the post of foreign minister.

The new cabinet, formed by a coalition of HDZ and Bridge, will seek to be approved by parliament on Friday.

"We've chosen a very good team which is a healthy mix of the people from business, academic circles and the public sector," Oreskovic said at news conference.

Oreskovic, a Croatian-Canadian businessman born in 1966, was nominated as the prime minister-designate after an inconclusive election on November 8 last year. Enditem
