Germany extends border controls indefinitely to curb refugee influx: interior minister

Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany will extend its border controls to reduce the refugee number for an indefinite period, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Thursday.

He told German public broadcaster Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) on Thursday that the German government wanted to appreciably reduce refugee arrivals and was prepared to register every refugee that entered Germany.

"We will send back people who do not have valid entry documents and who do not apply for asylum in Germany," the minister said.

Germany introduced border controls last September, particularly keeping an eye on the German-Austrian border, as influxes of refugees continued to trouble the country.

Germany is receiving less than 2,000 refugees per day in January this year, which is significantly lower than in last year, de Maiziere said. The number has to be reduced even further, she added.

He also stressed that the German government would look at a European solution to the current refugee crisis as long as it is feasible, which means securing external borders, negotiating with Turkey and providing aid to conflict areas. Endi
