Indian court sentences tobacco baron to life in jail for killing security guard

Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Indian court in the southern state of Kerala Thursday sentenced to life in jail a tobacco baron for killing his security guard with his car last year.

The judge had Wednesday convicted 39-year-old multi-millionaire Mohammad Nisham for running over Chandrabose, who worked at his posh residential society, with his Hummer in "a fit of rage" in 2015.

Though Nisham had pleaded for a lenient sentence, saying that he has been suffering from bipolar disorder, the court sent him to life in jail and also imposed a fine on him.

The tobacco baron is also an accused in 13 other cases and many of them had been settled out of court. However, this is the first time that he has been convicted.

The incident happened in January last year when Nisham, in a drunken state, ran over Chandrabose for taking time to open the gates.

He had dragged the security guard some 700 metres in a fit of rage. Chandrabose succumbed to his injuries in a hospital nearly three weeks after the savage assault. Endit
