Leaders of the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) are expected to approve the bloc's action plan for this year at a summit here scheduled for Jan. 27.
Leaders will have a three-hour debate to discuss any changes and the adoption of ancillary documents before the action plan is approved, according to an agenda released Tuesday by the Ecuadorian government.
The summit will also see Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa pass over the rotating presidency of the 33-member bloc to his counterpart from the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina.
According to the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry, more than 20 heads of state have confirmed their attendance.
Last week, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno said the summit must seek to find solutions to reducing inequality in the region.
During its CELAC presidency, Ecuador promoted a "2020 Agenda" focusing on reduction of poverty and inequality, education, innovation in science and technology, fighting climate change, and improving infrastructure and connectivity. Endi
