Spanish treasury places 4.9 bln euros on market at negative interest rates

The Spanish treasury placed on Tuesday treasury bills valued at 4.9 billion euros (5.33 billion U.S. dollars) on the market at negative interest rates, registering a demand of more than 10.2 billion euros.

A total of 4.42 billion euros worth of 12-month treasury bills carried an average interest rate of -0.06 percent, compared to the -0.024 percent of the previous issue.

The placement also included 481 million euros worth of six-month treasury bills that fetched an average interest rate of -0.105 percent, compared to the -0.069 percent of December.

The auction was a success considering the result of the general elections in December last year in which no political party won a majority to form government, a fact that could have worry investors. (1 euro = 1.09 U.S. dollars) Enditem
