A woman was killed and four others injured Tuesday in an explosion at Karbi Anglong district of the northeast Indian state of Assam, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited on the same day, said police.

Police said the blast was caused by a grenade thrown by unknown persons.

Modi visited the state capital Guwahati Tuesday and spoke to a rally of his allies to kick off the local legislative election campaign for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Some separatist groups are fighting for independence or greater autonomy in the restive northeast Indian region. Endit
