China's southwestern metropolis of Chongqing led the country in economic growth by posting an 11 percent growth of GDP in 2015, local statistics bureau announced Tuesday.
It far outpaced the country's 6.9-percent GDP growth, the slowest annual expansion in a quarter of a century.
Chongqing has maintained double-digit growth for three consecutive years. Its GDP reached 1.57 trillion yuan (239.6 billion U.S. dollars) in 2015, Zhang Fumin, deputy head of the municipal bureau of statistics, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
A boom in the auto and electronics industries, which grew by 20 percent and 10 percent respectively year on year, contributed to the growth, according to Zhang.
The city's foreign trade volume dropped by 20.8 percent to 464 billion yuan. Exports dropped by 12 percent and imports dropped by 38 percent year on year. Endit
