Colombian government welcomes EU support in FARC peace talks

Xinhua, January 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Colombian government on Monday welcomed the European Union reiteration of support for the ongoing peace process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas.

"We are reviewing the progress...focusing on the final stage of the negotiations," Minister Luis Carlos Villegas said in a statement released Monday on the website of the Ministry of Defense.

Villegas said that Colombia must have a strong military force that "can guarantee security against lingering threats."

The statement was released after Villegas met with Eamon Gilmore, an EU special commissioner, and Ana Paula Zacarias, Brazilian ambassador to the EU, who said that the EU public supports the negotiations with FARC guerrillas.

The meeting also focused on international assistance to issues such as justice, humanitarian demining, infrastructure and the training of public servants in charge of the post-agreements agenda.

Under the framework of the scheduled agreement signing with the FARC guerrillas, the Colombian government is seeking international aid to strengthen municipalities, as well as to ensure peace and security. Endi
