Russia, Qatar expect talks between Damascus, opposition in January: Lavrov

Xinhua, January 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Russia and Qatar hoped that talks between the Syrian government and the opposition would begin in January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

"Both Russia and Qatar hope that in line with the existing agreements and the United Nations Security Council resolution, talks between the Syrian government and the opposition will start in the nearest future, this month," Lavrov said after talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and visiting Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Both leaders stressed the need to seek a political solution to the Syria crisis, Lavrov said, adding that they agreed to step up efforts to put an end to the conflicts in the war-torn country.

They also noted the necessity of letting the Syrian people exercise their will, the diplomat added. Enditem
