10th Congress of Lao People's Revolutionary Party opens in Vientiane

The 10th Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party opened on Monday in the capital city of Vientiane.

The Congress was opened by Lao president, outgoing Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Secretary-General Choummaly Sayasone, who reported on the results of the past five years of efforts to lead Laos from the least-developed country status.

Addressing an 1,000-strong audience, Choummaly detailed achievements and challenges over the past five years of the LPRP's leadership of the Southeast Asian nation of some 6.5 million.

Outlining the achievements of the LPRP including on key metrics of socio-economic development since its 9th congress in 2011, Choummaly said the Lao people had enjoyed unparalleled peace and prosperity under the era of LPRP guidance as never before.

He identified key challenges including an end to all cases of fiscal misappropriation and indiscipline, improved balance in attracting foreign investment for socio-economic growth across sectors and human resource development at a time of greater regional integration between Laos, its regional neighbors and the wider international community.

Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong presented the LPRP's 8th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (NSEDP) to the 10th Congress.

A policy blueprint for Laos' socio-economic development for 2016-2020, the 8th NSEDP seeks to continue efforts towards removing Laos from the list of the world's least developed countries by 2020 and helping it achieve the status of upper-middle income country by 2030.

Thongsing outlined goals including consolidating Laos' regional and international integration including via the ASEAN Economic Community and other key regional groupings, taking further steps towards industrialization and modernization and enhancing the well-being of the Lao people and the prosperity of the country.

Key positions in the LPRP leadership structure including the Central Committee, Political Bureau and the position of secretary-general are expected to be opened for election during the 10th Congress which comes shortly after the commencement of the country's year-long chairmanship of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Endit
