Uganda's Wasswa signs for Iraq Premier League Club

Xinhua, January 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Experienced Ugandan midfielder Hassan Wasswa has signed a two-year deal with top Iraq Premeir League side Al Shorta SC.

"I am happy that this dream has finally come through after the deal was cleared by FIFA," a happy Wasswa told Xinhua on Sunday.

Wasswa who captained the Uganda Cranes at the 2014 Africa Nations Championship in South Africa has been without a club since he left Uganda Premier League side SC Villa.

Al Shorta SC are five times Iraq Premier League winners with the latest trophy coming in the 2012/13 season.

"I hope to concentrate on my football and possibly earn a recall to the national team," he added.

Wasswa returned to Uganda in 2011 after he was arrested at the Ataturk Airport in Turkish in possession of drugs. This led to the player being jailed and his contract with Kardemir Demir Celik Karabukspo being terminated.

Besides playing in Turkey, Wasswa played professional football with St George in Ethiopia and FC Cape Town in South Africa.

He has also played for KCCA FC and SC Villa in the Uganda Premier League. Endit
