Malta's National Film Policy 2016-2020, first of its kind focusing on the film industry, was launched by the archipelago's Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis on Saturday.

"We implement a long-term strategy to ensure Malta's competitiveness in the industry is maintained," the minister said.

He elaborated that Malta would be placed on the international map as a filming destination through the measures to be implemented in the coming years.

The policy looks at the film industry's infrastructure, with investments to be made in the Malta Film Studios and technologies which would encourage filmmakers to carry out the post-production phase in Malta.

Film-makers would also be provided with financial incentives, including cash rebates, investments through the Malta Film Fund as well as fiscal incentives, said the minister.

The number of film productions increased drastically in the past years. In 2014, 29 million euros (about 31.6 million U.S. dollars) was generated, and this figure stood at 100 million euros in 2015. (1 euro = 1.09 U.S. dollars) Endit
