China ready to promote use of renewable energy: official

A Chinese energy official said here on Saturday that China is ready to join the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in promoting the use of renewable energy.

Liu Qi, deputy director of China's National Energy Board, made the remarks at the opening session of the sixth annual IRENA assembly that started here on Saturday, where minister and officials of more than 150 countries and organizations gather.

He said China is willing to work with the IRENA, a UN affiliate, and its members in technology exchanges and industrial cooperation so as to expand the share of renewable energy in overall global consumption.

"China is also ready to help the less-developed countries and regions in all ways to better develop and use renewable sources of energy," he told the two-day meeting.

According to Adnan Z. Amin, the IRENA Director-General, achieving a 36 percent share of renewable energy in the global economy by 2030 would increase the global gross domestic product by 1.1 percent to 1.3 trillion U.S. Dollars.

Employment, said Amin, would also increase from the 9.2 million jobs in the renewable energy sector to more than 24 jobs by 2030.

IRENA was founded in 2009, and assembles 144 member states along with the European Union. Notable non-member states are Canada, Brazil and Ukraine. Endit
