Ukraine reports 25 deaths from flu over recent weeks

An outbreak of flu in Ukraine has claimed the lives of 25 people since early December, with 15 fatalities being registered in the past week, said the country's Health Minister Alexander Kvitashvili here Friday.

"As of today, we have registered 25 laboratory-confirmed deaths from flu, but it is too early to talk about the epidemic," Kvitashvili told reporters at a press conference.

Out of the total death toll, 22 people were killed by the H1N1 virus, two people died of the influenza of B type, while the atypical flu was responsible for one death, he said.

According to the Health Ministry, some 310 cases of illness were recorded for every 100,000 people in Ukraine over the past week. Out of them, 702 patients across the country were infected by severe flu strains.

The ministry's data also suggested that only 120,000 people in the country were given a flu shot on the eve of the winter season. Endit
