One volunteer was left brain-dead and five others in critical condition after a botched drug trial in Rennes in northwest France, the French health ministry said Friday.

"A serious accident" occurred during a trial for an oral medication developed by a European laboratory in Rennes, northwestern France, it added.

"This test was carried out at a private facility specialized in carrying out clinical trials to evaluate the safety of its use, tolerance and pharmacological profile of the molecule," the ministry said.

All trials on the drug have been suspended and all volunteers who had taken part in the trial are being recalled, according to the statement.

French Health Minister Marisol Touraine said the accident was "unprecedented." Endit
