Israel's former president Peres stable after emergency heart procedure

Xinhua, January 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The health condition of former Israeli President Shimon Peres is stable after an emergency heart procedure on Thursday morning, his office said.

Peres, 92, was admitted to the Sheba hospital outside Tel Aviv after feeling chest pains, his personal assistant, Ayelet Frish, said in a statement.

Rafi Walden, Peres' personal physician and his son-in-law, told reporters that the elder statesman is awake and feeling well.

"His condition is stable now," said Walden.

According to Michael Elder, head of Sheba's Heart Institute, Peres experienced "a mild heart attack," and underwent a successful cardiac catheterization.

Peres, Israel's ninth president, completed a seven-year term in office in 2014. However, he continued his public activity through the Peres Peace Center, an institute focused on advancing dialogue between Arabs and Israelis and carrying out development projects in the Middle East.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for signing the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians. The prize was shared with former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was later assassinated by a right-wing Israeli, and the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Endit
