A total of 11 people, including nine Afghan police and two militants, have been killed as clashes erupted in Gereshk district of the southern Helmand province on Wednesday.

"A group of armed Taliban rebels attacked police checkpoints in Adam Khan area of Gereshk district at 3:00 a.m. local time (2230 GMT Tuesday), which triggered gun battle and have left nine police and two insurgents dead," district governor Mohammad Sharif told Xinhua.

Intermittent firing was continuing, the official said, adding security forces were chasing the militants to ensure lasting peace in the area.

Taliban militants who have been fighting the government forces in the troubled Helmand province haven't commented. Enditem
