Russian men's volleyball team among five teams to qualify for Rio 2016

Defending Olympic men's volleyball champions Russia are one of five teams securing their place at the Rio 2016 Games, organizers said on Monday.

Russia came from a set down to defeat European and World League champions France 3-1 in the final of the European Olympic qualification tournament in Berlin on January 6.

"I would like to stress that this tournament was a lot more difficult and competitive than the European Championship three months ago," Russia coach Vladimir Alekno was quoted as saying by Rio2016.com.

"I am very happy with the result and also for all players on the team who have worked hard towards this achievement," he added.

The Cuban men's team also qualified while Russia, Argentina and the USA confirmed their places in the women's competition by winning their regional qualifying tournaments. Endit
