WCBA suspends Shanghai forward Shi five games for slapping opponent

Shanghai small forward Shi Xiufeng, capped many times for national team, was suspended five games on Monday for slapping Guangdong's Belarussian center Yelena Leuchanka on her face in a Chinese Women's Basketball Association (WCBA) game.

The Shanghai club was also fined 3,000 yuan (about 460 U.S. dollars) for Shi's unethical behaviour.

In last Saturday's match, Shi stunned fans by slapping Yelena's face with 6:07 to go in the second quarter, before she was ejected by referees. Yelena also got a technical foul for the incident.

It was the the second attack that the 32-year-old Belarussian has suffered in three days. She had seven stitches under her left eye which was resulted from an elbow hit by Shanghai center Elizabeth Cambage in last Thursday's game. The 24-year-old Australian rising star was suspended one game thereafter.

Shi was a member of the Chinese team for Incheon Asian Games in 2014. She also played a key role in her club, averaging 12 points from 22 games this season.

Yelena joined the WNBA in 2006 and played for the Charlotte Sting, the Washington Mystics and the Atlanta Dream during her WNBA tour, averaging 3.4 points and 2.3 rebounds. Yelena also attended the 2008 Summer Olympics.

In WCBA, Yelena once played for Liaoning and Jiangsu, and then joined Guangdong before the 2015-2016 season. She averaged 20.8 points and 13 rebounds from 24 games this season. Endit
