Greek liberal economic reformer Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a former administrative minister, who represents the new generation of Greece's conservatives, was elected new leader of the main opposition New Democracy (ND) party on Sunday.

With 70 percent of the votes counted, Mitsotakis, 47, scion of a political dynasty, garnered 51 percent to win the leadership, the party's electoral committee announced. (Greece-Opposition Leader)

BERLIN -- German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung apologized on Sunday to its readers for an illustration to the Cologne assaults on the front page of the weekend edition.

Editor in chief of Sueddeutsche Zeitung Wolfgang Krach wrote on Sunday on facebook that the illustration showing a black man's hand between two white female legs "caused incomprehension and anger" among a number of readers, who criticized it as "sexist and racist." CAIRO -- The Arab League (AL) chief accused Iran of provocative acts on Sunday, as Arab foreign ministers discussed the ongoing political feud between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Egyptian state-run Ahram online reported.

Al chief Nabil al-Arabi urged the Arab countries to adopt a strong and clear common position, calling on Iran to stop all forms of interference in the affairs of Arab nations. (AL-Iran)

UNITED NATIONS -- A UN envoy said Sunday that Iran and Saudi Arabia have assured him that their row would not affect their engagement in Syrian peace talks to be held later this month.
