Danish kayaker Rene Holten Poulsen was on Saturday named the country's sportsperson of the year 2015, in Herning, Denmark.

The Sports Confederation of Denmark and Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper voted to award Poulsen the prize, which is known as Sports Name of the Year and is among the country's top sports prizes.

"He has for many years been one of Denmark's strongest and most winning athletes, and he was absolutely superb in 2015. We look forward to following his performance at the Olympics in Rio this summer," DSA Chairman Niels Nygaard said in a press statement announcing the award.

The 27-year-old kayaker from Maribo Kayak Club won a total of six medals in international championships in 2015, including two World Cup medals, three European Championship medals and one European Games bronze medal.
