Afghan security forces launched operations to recapture Darqad district in the northern Takhar province with Taluqan as its capital, 245 km north of Kabul on Saturday, provincial police spokesman Abdul Khalil Asir said.

"Units of police backed by the army and National Directorate for Security kicked off operations in Darqad district at 02:00 a.m. local time today and would last till the eviction of militants and returning government rule there," Asir told Xinhua.

The security forces have faced no resistance so far and the operation goes smoothly, the official added.

Taliban militants who overrun Darqad district along the border with Tajikistan in last October have yet to make comment. Enditem
