Norwegian postal plane crashes in Swedish mountains

Xinhua, January 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Norwegian postal plane with two people on board crashed in Sweden's northern mountains in the early hours on Friday, local media reported.

Two Norwegian search jets located a wreckage between the Norwegian border and the river Akkujaures in the northernmost parts of Sweden, according to daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

"It is a very clear crash site. The total diameter is about 50 meters. There are no large parts, only fragments left of the aircraft," the Swedish Maritime Administration's spokesperson Daniel Lindblad told news agency TT.

A 42-year-old Spanish citizen captained the plane alongside a 34-year-old French deputy, according to airline operator West Atlantic, public broadcaster Swedish Radio reported.

The plane had sent emergency signals to Swedish authorities a couple of hours prior to the discovery, Dagens Nyheter reported. Norwegian and Swedish authorities each sent one ambulance helicopter to the site of the crash.

The plane, a medium size business jet, was on its way from Oslo's Gardemoen airport to the city of Tromso in northern Norway.

Swedish authorities will need to use helicopters and snow scooters to reach the wreckage due to the mountainous terrain, Dagens Nyheter reported. Endit
