Tokyo shares end lower on weak China economic outlook

Tokyo shares ended the choppy trading Friday lower with its benchmark Nikkei stock index hitting a record 5-day loss to start a new year, as sentiment here aired concerns over China's economic outlook.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 69.38 points, or 0.39 percent, from Thursday at 17,697.96, its lowest closing level in over three months.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 10.62 points, or 0.73 percent, lower to 1,447.32.

Decliners were led by utilities, shipping and construction issues.

The turnover was about 3,201.7 billion yen (about 27.04 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
